Tancredo’s views on illegal immigration

Re “GOP Lawmaker Relishes Role as a Flamethrower,” Dec. 27
I have the utmost respect for Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) or any government leader who publicly tackles illegal immigration head-on. But it is unfair to expect government leaders and agencies to solve the problem without the assistance of U.S. citizens.
How many affluent and well-educated citizens intentionally “employ” illegal immigrants for self-serving economic agendas? Why not impose civil fines, similar to traffic violations, for those who support illegal immigration behind closed doors but, when politically correct, point the finger at government agencies.
Solving the problems of illegal immigration must be the responsibility of everyone. Without accountability from all parties, those entering the U.S. will have no reason to seek legal status through the proper chains of command.

Who are the “some” The Times speaks of who find the following statement by Tancredo to be “not just ugly but wrong”: “It’s of no consequence to me where you’re from. All that I ask of you is that when you get here, you become an American!”
To me, that request sounds very reasonable. Sign me up.
