Authorities arrested a 23-year-old man Sunday in the fatal shooting of a police officer who was gunned down while taking a teenager on a ride-along.
Alberto Alvarez of East Palo Alto was taken into custody after an intense manhunt about 6 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officer Richard May, 38, was shot while responding to a disturbance about 5 p.m. Saturday, police said.
Alvarez was found at a police checkpoint after officers became suspicious when they stopped a Chrysler and saw someone duck down in the back. Alvarez had a gunshot wound to the leg, apparently inflicted by May, police said.
