Storm Debris Forces Closure of Shellfish Beds

Debris and sewage swept downriver by nearly a week of heavy rain have forced officials to close shellfish beds from Cape Cod to southern Maine, officials said.
The runoff from overwhelmed sewer systems carries waste and bacteria that can pollute the beds, Michael Hickey, the state’s chief shellfish biologist, said in Boston. More than a foot of rain has fallen in the region since Friday.
