* San Diego 7, at New York 5: Jake Peavy slowed down the Mets by striking out 11. Hours after major league earned-run average leader Chris Young returned to San Diego because of a bad back, Peavy (14-5) delivered the big performance the NL wild-card leaders needed. Peavy limited the Mets to two hits over six innings. Trevor Hoffman got two outs for his 32nd save in 36 chances, following his ninth-inning meltdown the previous night in a 7-6 loss.

* at St. Louis 6, Florida 4: Albert Pujols homered and played through pain, and Jim Edmonds’ two-run, seventh-inning shot put the Cardinals ahead for good. Yadier Molina also homered for the Cardinals, all three of the long balls coming against Scott Olsen (9-11). Afterward, team doctors examined Pujols, who suffered a hamstring injury but finished the game. Pujols said he was told there was no ligament damage.

* Pittsburgh 11, at Colorado 2: Nate McLouth hit a pair of home runs, two of a season-high six hit by the Pirates, who also pounded out 17 hits. Pittsburgh starter Tom Gorzelanny (12-7) went six innings for his third win in his last four starts.

* at Cincinnati 4, Atlanta 2: Josh Hamilton and Jeff Keppinger hit consecutive home runs, and Bronson Arroyo drove in a run as the Reds won for the third time in four games.

* at Houston 3, Washington 2: Woody Williams won his third straight decision and Ty Wigginton hit a solo home run as the Astros ended a three-game losing streak.

* Chicago 4, at San Francisco 2 (10 innings): Jason Kendall’s grounder toward second kicked off Rich Aurilia’s foot and into shallow center, allowing pinch-runner Felix Pie to score.

* at Arizona 3, Milwaukee 2: Brandon Webb’s scoreless-innings streak ended at 42, but Chris Young hit his 26th homer for the Diamondbacks.

* Dodgers 15, at Philadelphia 3: Andre Ethier and James Loney each drove in three runs, Matt Kemp had a career-high four hits and Derek Lowe pitched seven solid innings.
