Clowe’s two goals lead the Sharks

Ryane Clowe had two goals and an assist, Vesa Toskala made 29 saves and San Jose beat Phoenix, 4-1, Saturday in Glendale, Ariz., the Sharks’ fifth win in six games.

Shane Doan scored for the Coyotes, losers of two games in a row after a seven-game winning streak.

Clowe ended a 1-1 tie at 14 minutes 28 seconds of the second period when he one-timed Doug Murray’s pass from the left boards over Curtis Joseph’s left shoulder for his eighth goal in five games.

Clowe has 11 goals and three assists in 21 games.

Calgary 3, Edmonton 1 -- Dion Phaneuf scored the tiebreaking power-play goal at 11:29 of the third period for the host Flames, who were two for four on the power play. The Flames won their fifth consecutive game and remained in first place in the Northwest Division.

Tampa Bay 3, Buffalo 2 -- Brad Richards scored the go-ahead goal seven minutes into the third period. Vincent Lecavalier scored his team-leading 27th goal, and Dan Boyle also scored in extending Tampa Bay’s winning streak to a season-best four games. The Lightning also ended a six-game losing skid against the Sabres, and won for the first time in five trips to Buffalo.

Nashville 4, Columbus 1 -- Jerred Smithson had the first two-goal game of his career, and the visiting Predators won their fifth game in a row. They have won 13 of their last 16 and all five games against the Blue Jackets this season.

Also Saturday, the Blue Jackets put center Sergei Fedorov on the injured reserve list and added forward Joakim Lindstrom to the roster on emergency recall from the club’s American Hockey League affiliate in Syracuse. Fedorov was put on the list retroactive to Jan. 6, when he injured an elbow in a game at San Jose.

Vancouver 6, Toronto 1 -- Daniel Sedin, Mattias Ohlund, Trevor Linden, Taylor Pyatt and Sami Salo scored power-play goals to lead the Canucks on the road. Vancouver, outshot 36-21, was five for 10 on the power play.

New Jersey 2, New York Islanders 1 -- Scott Gomez scored with 1:20 left in overtime to lift the visiting Devils. Patrik Elias took the puck in the Islanders’ zone, drew a defenseman down, and passed to Gomez, who slid the puck in the short side past Rick DiPietro for his eighth goal.

Detroit 6, Chicago 3 -- Jason Williams had two goals for the host Red Wings. Williams scored his second goal at 13:37 of the third period and was followed by the Blackhawks’ Tony Salmelainen and then Danny Markov within 50 seconds to make it 5-3.

Atlanta 4, Carolina 3 -- Slava Kozlov and Marian Hossa scored in a shootout to lift the Thrashers at Raleigh, N.C. Atlanta ended a five-game losing streak to stretch its lead back to five points over the second-place Hurricanes in the Southeast Division.

Florida 7, Washington 3 -- Stephen Weiss scored three goals for the first hat trick of his career for the Panthers. Alexander Semin, Matt Pettinger and Chris Clark scored for Washington, which lost its fifth consecutive game on the road.

Ottawa 8, Montreal 3 -- Daniel Alfredsson had a goal and four assists, and Chris Kelly had a career-high four points in the Senators’ win at home. Dany Heatley had a goal and two assists as Ottawa scored four goals in each of the first two periods to match its season high for goals in a game.

Pittsburgh 5, Philadelphia 3 -- Jordan Staal scored the go-ahead goal in the third period, and the Pengins won on the road for their sixth victory this season against their cross-state rivals.

New York Rangers 3, Boston 1 -- Martin Straka tied Brendan Shanahan for the Rangers’ goal lead, and Jed Ortmeyer scored on a late penalty shot for the home victory.

Martin Brodeur, the backbone of New Jersey’s defense for more than a decade, was one of 30 players selected for the NHL All-Star game, to be held Jan. 24 in Dallas.

Ryan Miller, one of three Buffalo Sabres elected to the East squad, will start in goal. Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo will be his counterpart for the West.

Notable omissions were the Rangers’ Jaromir Jagr (shoulder) and the Flames’ Jarome Iginla (knee), who will sit out because of injuries.
