Court upholds student refunds

The California Supreme Court has upheld a decision ordering the University of California to issue refunds to tens of thousands of students whose tuition and fees were raised after classes had begun.
The high court’s refusal Wednesday to hear the UC system’s appeal of the case clears the way for about 35,000 graduate and undergraduate students to be reimbursed. Individual students could receive amounts ranging from several thousand dollars to more than $10,000, lawyers said.
In all, the university owes about $34 million in overcharges, plus $6 million in interest, said Jonathan Weissglass, a lawyer for the students.
UC Berkeley and UCLA imposed the midyear increases in 2003 to compensate for state budget cuts.
