A Los Angeles police officer fatally shot a man Wednesday night in Ramona Gardens, an Eastside housing project with a history of confrontations between police and residents.
The shooting occurred just before 6 p.m. outside the Boyle Heights complex, said LAPD Officer Jason Lee.
He said the incident occurred when the man confronted two Hollenbeck Division gang officers and the police fired at him in response.
Sgt. Lee Sands said it appears that the man fired at the officers. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
He said he did not know how many shots were fired.
The victim was taken to an area hospital in critical condition and died there, Lee said.
Residents said the victim was riding a bicycle at the time, but Lee was unable to confirm that. He said the victim may have been a gang member.
Neither of the officers was injured and their names were not released.
