The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq:
Jason A. Karella, 20, of Anchorage; corporal, Marine Corps. Karella was killed in combat Thursday in southwest Afghanistan’s Farah province. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms, Calif.
William P. Rudd, 27, of Madisonville, Ky.; sergeant, Army. Rudd was killed Oct. 5 when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Mosul, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Ft. Benning, Ga.
Tavarus D. Setzler, 23, of Jacksonville, Fla.; private first class, Army. Setzler was killed Oct. 2 when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Majar al Kabir, Iraq, southeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.
Michael R. Stahlman, 45, of Chevy Chase, Md.; colonel, Marine Corps. Stahlman died Oct. 5 of non-combat-related injuries suffered July 31 while serving in Iraq’s Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Calif.
Jason von Zerneck, 33, of Charlotte, N.C.; specialist, Army National Guard. Von Zerneck was killed Oct. 2 when his Humvee overturned in Qara Bagh Karez, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry Regiment, New York Army National Guard in Jamestown, N.Y.
