An Orange County man died over the weekend after trying to jump off a 200-foot cliff at a popular diving spot in Lake Havasu.
John Karl Kissel, 43, of Costa Mesa, took a running leap Saturday afternoon off a point in the Copper Canyon area of Lake Havasu, but struck a rock face just before reaching the water, said Jodi Miller, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Emergency crews were called at 4:37 p.m. and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Copper Canyon, a cove on the western side of the lake, is well-known among amateur cliff divers, who flock to several of its rocky points on summer weekends to leap into the shallow water.
