Championship Semifinals
Northwood 0, Royal 0 (Northwood advances on penalty kicks, 5-3)
Caitlyn Schneider converted the decisive penalty kick for Northwood (6-5-1) in a championship semifinal game of the Claremont tournament. The Timberwolves, which outshot Royal, 15-1, in 60 minutes of regulation play, will face Walnut in the championship game at 11 a.m. Saturday at Claremont High. Northwood’s losses have been San Clemente, Mater Dei, Santa Margarita, Dana Hills and Long Beach Wilson.

Lindsay Crown scored in the 40th minute with an assist from junior defensive midfielder Drew Effler, who also scored the Timberwolves’ second goal in the 45th minute. Effler has taken over the defensive midfield position from Jessica Johns, last year’s Pacific Coast League most valuable player, after Johns suffered a broken collarbone in a nonleague game against San Clemente.

Tanya Taylor and Jeanette Chavez each scored one second-half goal to lift Sunny Hills (14-2). Valencia is 6-4-1.

Kristina Walowski scored in the final minute of overtime on a through ball by Courtney Campbell to help Wilson (9-3-1) avoid penalty kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Gustaves made seven saves, including two clutch plays on prime University opportunities, for her fourth shutout of the season.

Ashley Bower scored in the 38th minute on a feed from Cherise Repasy as Aliso Niguel improved to 11-3-2. Amanda McNab had two saves for Aliso Niguel. Ashley Thompson had five saves for Trabuco Hills.

Canyon advanced on penalty kicks after playing Fountain Valley to a scoreless tie.

Cas Cortes converted the decisive penalty kick and goalkeeper Jessica McGovern stopped Esperanza’s fifth attempt to give the Eagles (7-1-2) the victory. Esperanza falls to 3-4-1.

Bo Medina, Hayley Bolt, and Erin Bay scored goals and Niccole Grimaldi had two assists to lead Los Alamitos (6-2).
