Letters: Gun culture and Oklahoma

Re “Oklahoma slaying stirs speculation,” Aug. 22
Duncan, Okla., Police Chief Daniel P. Ford is quoted as saying:
“These punk kids are going to take our freedom away? Give me a break. Why would we let three thugs do that?”
The police chief said he was frustrated by the questions from Australian officials and media as to why guns are so widely allowed here.
First of all, anyone who thinks his freedom is completely tied to his almighty gun is the thug. Sounds to me like these kids might have found something else to do had they not had easy access to guns.
This country really needs to get its act together and realize that we have to take care of our kids. We have generations of kids growing up with subpar educations, no parental supervision and lots of guns.
Ignorance and guns: not a good combination. The Duncan police chief certainly demonstrates that point.
