Two games remain on the regular season-schedule for the Laguna Beach High football team, both on the road.
First up, is an Orange Coast League matchup with Calvary Chapel. The Eagles will play host to the Breakers at 7 p.m. Friday at Ocean View High.
Calvary Chapel can secure a tie for the OCL title with a win Friday. The Eagles, with previous league victories over Estancia (23-21), Godinez (30-24) and Saddleback (35-25), lead the league pack at 3-0 and are 5-3 overall.
Estancia is the only ranked OCL team in the CIF Southern Section Southern Division poll, coming in at No. 9.
Laguna completed its home slate Oct. 23 with the program’s 60th homecoming game against Estancia. The Breakers scored early but never led again, as the Eagles pulled away to a 31-14 victory at Guyer Field. The result put them at 0-3 in league, and 2-6 overall.
Laguna struck for a 7-0 lead on Estancia when quarterback Jack Simon and George Cracknell hooked up on a 14-yard touchdown pass. The 10-play, 50-yard scoring drive, was set up by Simon who, on Laguna’s opening possession, punted on fourth down and picked up a loose ball that bounced off Estancia’s Braxton Luke. Simon scooped up the ball at the Laguna 36 and returned it to midfield.
The Breakers trailed, 17-7, with 7:53 left in the second quarter, but drew to within 17-14 a little more than three minutes later on a four-yard touchdown run by Simon. Estancia countered with a three-play scoring drive that led to a 24-14 halftime advantage.
The Eagles scored on the opening possession of the second half to increase their advantage to 31-14.
Simon led the rushing game, gaining 166 of Laguna’s 205 yards total on 22 carries. He also threw for 108 yards. Receiver Matt Hayes had eight receptions for 72 yards.
Jack Simon now ranks No. 5 in Laguna career total offense with 3,799 yards, surpassing Drake Martinez (3,533). Simon also ranks No. 5 in career passing yards (3,027).
