Dodgers shut out Reds, 2-0, in spring game

AT THE PLATE: Again, offense was in short supply. The Dodgers scored their first run in the fourth inning, when Casey Blake was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a groundout by Andre Ethier and was driven in on a double by Matt Kemp. They didn’t score again until the eighth inning, when Trent Oeltjen’s single knocked in top prospect Dee Gordon.
ON THE MOUND: Opening day starter Clayton Kershaw was magnificent, as he held the Reds to a hit and a walk over four scoreless innings. “I came out throwing strikes,” Kershaw said. “Overall, it’s a good day of work.”
EXTRA BASES: Jamey Carroll’s right hand was wrapped in ice after the game. Carroll was struck as he fouled off a pitch but said after the game that he was fine.
UP NEXT: Chad Billingsley faces the Chicago Cubs and Ryan Dempster in Mesa, Ariz., at noon PST Sunday.
