LONDON -- The swimming community thought that a world record -- or two -- might be produced at the London Olympics, in this new age of the textile suits.

It’s a good guess that it was not anticipated to unfold the opening night of swimming.

The woman to move the 400-meter individual medley forward was Ye Shiwen of China, who set the first world record of these Olympics, winning in 4 minutes 28.43 seconds.

Stephanie Rice of Australia held the record, of 4:29.45, set at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

American Elizabeth Beisel was second in 4:31.27, 2.84 seconds behind Ye. Team USA has won three medals in three finals on Saturday night.
