Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson admits he cheated on test

Quarterback Everett Golson, who led Notre Dame to last year’s BCS title game, admitted in a Sports Illustrated story he was suspended from the team for cheating.

“Basically, I had poor judgment on a test,” Golson told SI’s Andy Staples in a recent interview.

Golson was suspended for the semester but plans to return to Notre Dame in January.

“My heart was set on going back to Notre Dame,” Golson said. “Not necessarily to prove [anything] to anybody. Just doing it for me. I felt like that’s something that I started and I didn’t want to run away from it. ... I was going to face it.”

Golson won the starting job as a redshirt freshman last year and surprisingly led Notre Dame to a 12-0 regular season record.

The Irish lost to Alabama in the BCS title game. Senior Tommy Rees replaced Golson this year and has led Notre Dame to a 6-2 record and No. 25 ranking in the latest BCS standings.

Golson is working out in San Diego with noted quarterback coach George Whitfield.
