Sacramento : Assembly Panel Backs Workfare
- Share via
The Assembly Human Services Committee approved an extension Tuesday of San Diego County’s “workfare” program, but with several modifications that Assemblywoman Lucy Killea (D-San Diego) said will improve the 3-year-old experiment.
The program will end June 30 unless the Legislature extends it. A Senate committee approved a similar two-year extension of the program last week.
As state Sen. Wadie Deddeh (D-Chula Vista) had in the Senate, Killea resisted pressure to tie the extension to a more liberal pilot project in another county.
The program has been caught in an intense legislative debate over welfare reform that has generated 12 separate bills aimed at finding employment for welfare recipients.
The Killea bill, approved 7-1 Tuesday, must now be considered by the Assembly Ways and Means Committee.
