Flemish Painting Stolen in Rome

ROME — A small painting attributed to the school of Flemish master Peter Bruegel was stolen from the Capitoline Museum on Tuesday.

“Pilgrims of Emmaus,” which measures 10 inches by 4 inches, was on the wall in the gallery room when the museum opened but had vanished an hour later, a museum official said.

No monetary value had been assigned to the 16th-Century painting, which bears the initials, “P.P.,” the museum said.

The artist, known as Bruegel the Elder, was the foremost painter in the Flemish school.
