Former Rep. M. Hannaford Dies of Cancer

Mark Hannaford, a two-term Long Beach-area congressman, has died of lung cancer in a Lakewood hospital. Hannaford, a Democrat who served in Congress from 1974 to 1978, was 60 and had been battling the illness for six months.
He was a member of the Lakewood City Council from 1966 to 1974. As a congressman, he sponsored energy legislation during the oil crises of the late 1970s.
Since his defeat by Republican Dan Lungren, Hannaford had been a Washington lobbyist and a teacher after a brief stint in the Carter Administration as an assistant secretary of commerce.
In 1980 he moved from Lakewood to Paramount and ran unsuccessfully against Mervyn M. Dymally in the 31st Congressional District.
Hannaford is survived by his wife, Sara, three sons and three grandchildren.
A memorial service has been scheduled for June 15 at the Burns Community Center in Lakewood. He died Sunday.
