“Out of Africa” got a boost in box-office receipts last weekend, capitalizing on its seven Academy Awards, but it did not make up any ground on “The Color Purple.”
Both films grossed a little more than $2 million during the weekend, but “The Color Purple,” with $81 million in box-office grosses, still has a $6.5 million lead over “Africa.” The distributor for “Africa” added 135 theaters last weekend, for a total of 885, but the film still did just $700,000 better than the previous weekend.
“Police Academy 3” led the box-office chart for the second week, grossing $5.8 million to run its 10-day total to $18.4 million. Universal’s “The Money Pit” overcame mostly negative reviews to get off to a $5.3-million opening weekend. Paramount’s “April Fool’s Day” did modest business with $3.4 million in grosses.
The other new release, Fox’s “Lucas,” opened weakly with $1.3 million.
