Portugal’s Rosa Mota set a women’s world record and Thom Hunt of San Diego pulled away from England’s Roger Hackney to win the Nike Cherry Blossom 10-Mile Road Race at Washington, D.C.

Mota, despite a sore Achilles’ tendon, left her nearest women’s challenger behind at the two-mile mark and finished in 53 minutes 9 seconds, breaking the mark of 53:18, set in 1982 by Joan Benoit. New Zealand’s Lorraine Moller was the second in 53:48, and Joan Nesbit of Charlotte, N.C. was third in 54:41.

Hunt, 28, missed equaling Greg Meyer’s world best by two seconds, clocking 46:15. Hackney was runner-up in 46:41 and Jim Cooper of Winston Salem, N.C. took third in 47:00. Hunt led early but faded shortly after the four-mile mark and wound up seventh.
