A federal judge has decreased by $1.9 million a jury’s award to former University of Georgia instructor Jan Kemp, who claimed that she was fired for protesting preferential academic treatment for athletes.
Kemp said that she may refuse the reduced amount and force a new trial. “I think the public will learn a great deal more . . . about the goings on at the University of Georgia,” she said.
U.S. District Judge Horace Ward said that a federal jury tried to send a message in support of free speech with its $2,579,681.95 award to Mrs. Kemp, but “the reach and coverage of the award far outdistance the aim and purpose.”
