Olympic marathon champion Joan Benoit Samuelson teamed with Jeff Drenth of Eugene, Ore., to win the Trevira Twosome road race in New York’s Central Park in the combined time of 1 hour 41 minutes 7 seconds.
Samuelson’s time of 53:18 for the 10 miles equaled her American record and topped the meet record of 53:19 set last year by Grete Waitz of Norway.
Drenth was fourth among the men in 47:49.
Jim Ryun, former world record-holder in the mile, dropped out with a pulled calf muscle after four miles in his first 10-mile road race. He had been teamed with Jan Merrill of New London, Conn.
