Cal Lutheran Drops the Opener, Then Unloads on Azusa Pacific to Gain Split

Cal Lutheran split a doubleheader with Azusa Pacific on Saturday, losing the opener, 5-3, and winning the second game, 8-3.
Phil Owens, who started for Azusa Pacific (15-23, 12-4 in NAIA District III) in the first game, picked up his sixth win in seven decisions.
Ed Howard paced the Kingsmen (23-15, 7-10 in District III) in the second game with a three-run homer in the seventh inning. It was his seventh home run of the season.
CLU’s Jay Knight, who had a .419 batting average before Saturday’s games, collected four hits, including three doubles, in eight at-bats.
Azusa Pacific is in first place in the district. Cal Lutheran is in third place.
