Seven defendants accused of smuggling five tons of marijuana from Thailand to California aboard a vessel called the Line Island Trader pleaded not guilty in Los Angeles federal court to drug charges. Assistant U.S. Atty. Brian A. Sun said a U.S. Coast Guard cutter intercepted the ship April 15, 1986, about 850 miles south of Hawaii. Those arrested and charged included William Herbert Pintard, 39, Carpinteria; Thomas Leo Tobin, 42; Danny Gene Lind, 38; Michael Dennis Perrin, 35; Richard Clinton Black, 36; Owen George Taylor, 36, and Marty Jo Frakes, 28. Another suspect, Steven Paul Valot, 35, of Honolulu, was still in Hawaii.
