Fountain Valley Driver Wins Qualifier

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Newt Withers of Fountain Valley won Thursday’s final qualifying stage of the Great American Race, a 3,920-mile auto rally for classic cars.

Withers drove his 1934 Packard Roadster within 19 seconds of a perfect time on the 315-mile route from Atlanta to Tallahassee.

Eighty of the 99 cars that began the race at Disneyland in Anaheim are eligible for today’s $100,000 final race to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. The winner of that race will receive $50,000.
