SAN SALVADOR — Leftist rebels blew up part of a bridge under construction in eastern El Salvador and damaged electrical towers in several parts of the country, authorities said Saturday.
A military spokesman said guerrillas of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front on Friday blew up a side of the bridge on the outskirts of San Buena Ventura, about 70 miles east of San Salvador.
Sources at the state electrical company said that in the past two days, the guerrillas damaged three conductor towers for main power lines in the northern part of San Salvador province. The damage reportedly caused power outages in parts of the capital and surrounding areas.
The sources also said that during the week, the rebels damaged 18 electrical towers and posts in the eastern part of the country, causing sporadic outages.
The rebels have been at war with the government since early 1980 and especially have targeted the nation’s infrastructure and basic services, causing an estimated $2 billion in damage.
