Jerry’s idyllic article on Portofino would have been delightfully apropos 30 years ago, when we made our first visit on our honeymoon, but today, nonsense! Portofino is a glorified shopping mall, cluttered with post card and gift shops, port-side coffee bars and restaurants. Santa Margherita is now the real story: several excellent hotels, moderately priced (we love the Continental) smack on the Mediterranean, with swimming in the sea, not a swimming pool, just off your room and terrace.
