Sonora High School scored a touchdown on each of its first four possessions and coasted to a 40-6 victory over Buena Park in a Freeway League football game Friday night at La Habra.
Going into the game, Sonora (5-4-1 overall, 2-3 in league) had a chance to earn a playoff spot if Fullerton and La Habra both lost. But La Habra’s 30-24 victory over Sunny Hills assured La Habra of third place in the league and a Southern Section playoff berth. Sonora finished fourth in the league.
Running back Scott Tibbets helped give Sonora an early lead by scoring its first two touchdowns on runs of one and four yards. Marcus Garrett made it 21-0 on Sonora’s third possession with a 6-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Billy Robb added to Sonora’s string of scores when he connected on a touchdown pass for 24 yards to wide receiver Marty Minich.
Robb, a 6-foot 2-inch senior, completed 5 of 11 passes for 95 yards and a touchdown.
Buena Park (3-7, 0-5) got its only score on Dave Baylor’s one-yard run with 2:23 left in the first half. Baylor’s touchdown capped an 80-yard, 12-play drive.
“We knew we really needed to win big tonight if we wanted any chance of a playoff spot,” Sonora Coach Steve Silberman said. “This is the way we’re capable of playing, and we finally showed it on the field tonight.”
