The San Jose City Council voted to build a $75-million indoor sports arena in the downtown area, a facility officials hope will be open by 1991.
About 550 people turned out at the council chambers, where the vote was 8-3 to construct the 20,000-seat facility.
Residents in the area urged the council to put the issue on the ballot or at least delay a decision until more is known about the project’s impact.
