U.S. Vetoes Resolution Condemning Israel Raid

UNITED NATIONS — The United States on Tuesday vetoed a Security Council resolution condemning last week’s Israeli sweep into southern Lebanon.
The vote on the resolution was 14 in favor and one against, with no abstentions.
The resolution would have condemned “the recent invasion by Israeli forces of southern Lebanon.”
It would also have issued a new call for the “immediate withdrawal of all Israeli forces from Lebanese territory”--a reference to the so-called Israeli “security zone”--and for a cessation of all acts “that violate the sovereignty of Lebanon and the security of its population.”
The sponsors of the resolution were Algeria, Argentina, Nepal, Senegal, Yugoslavia and Zambia.
