UCSD’s Division III Winning Streak Ends at 41

Top-ranked UC San Diego had its 41-match winning streak against Division III opponents stopped when unranked LaVerne College defeated the Tritons 15-13, 15-13, 16-14 in a nonleague women’s volleyball match at LaVerne (14-9) Saturday.
UCSD (24-6), the two-time defending national champion, had not lost to a Division III team since October 1986, when it lost to Menlo College.
Cal Lutheran defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 15-12, 12-15, 15-12, 15-11, in a Golden State Athletic Conference match. PLNC is 10-14 and 2-7.
William & Mary defeated U.S. International University, 12-15, 15-8, 15-7, 14-16, 15-12, in La Jolla. USIU is 4-9.
CROSS-COUNTRY
The Point Loma Nazarene College men and women won their first Golden State Athletic Conference titles Saturday at Christ College of Irvine.
Freshmen Goshu Tadese and Ronny Andersson crossed the finish line together to lead the PLNC men. Rick Penman finished fourth. The winners ran 27:16 for 5 miles.
PLNC won with 32 points; Cal Lutheran was second at 42.
Eva Lindblad finished third and Tonya Russell was sixth to lead PLNC’s women. Sherri Hall, a 37-year-old from Southern California College, won in 19:40.
PLNC finished with 43 points. Fresno Pacific and Cal Lutheran tied for second with 69.
The University of San Diego men’s and women’s cross-country teams finished second at the Loyola Marymount Invitational.
Sue Chen of USD won the women’s 5K race and Dan McNamee was third in the men’s 8K race for the Toreros. Pepperdine won both.
San Diego State’s men and UC San Diego’s women both finished fifth at the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Invitational. UCSD was eighth and USIU 11th in the men’s race.
SOCCER
Heather Mauro scored with 8 minutes remaining, breaking a 1-1 tie, and UC San Diego’s women (14-0-1) scored twice more in the next 2 minutes for a 4-1 victory over Westmont College (2-10). UCSD’s Katy Dulock scored the final goal giving her a school-record 19 for the season.
Cal Baptist defeated Point Loma Nazarene College, 2-1, in overtime in a Golden State Athletic Conference match. Barry Lloyd scored the winning goal in overtime for Cal Baptist (3-2 conference). J.C. Alvarez scored for PLNC (7-6-1, 1-3).
Leading, 1-0, the U.S. International University allowed a goal with 3 minutes remaining in regulation and another with 3 minutes remaining in the second overtime as the Gulls lost to Drake, 2-1, in the first round of the Air Force Academy Tournament. Craig Hyde scored for USIU (4-6).
WATER POLO
Dave Calder scored 5 goals in each game as 10th-ranked UC San Diego (12-9) defeated Washington & Lee, 14-3, and Claremont-Mudd, 14-5, in a doubleheader at UCSD.
GOLF
San Diego State finished 11th and the University of San Diego was tied for 12th with Cal State Long Beach in the New Mexico State Classic at Las Cruces.
Colorado and Texas Tech tied for the team championship at 871. Hub Goyen of Nevada Las Vegas won the individual title.
BODYBOARDING
Mike Conley of San Diego beat five others including Don Almeido of San Diego (second) and Kevin Cerv of Leucadia (sixth) in the finals of the seventh Morey Boogie Bodyboarding Contest in waves of 3-4 feet at Del Mar.
