The exotic Orient Express, once world-renowned for its luxurious train service between Paris and Istanbul, is making its way to Japan by land and sea to offer tourists a high-style tour of their native land.
The Japan Times reported that the 11-coach train, owned by Intraflag, a Swiss company, left Paris last month, traveling through Germany, the Soviet Union and China. The last leg involves a ship ride from Hong Kong to Japan, where JR Group companies will begin offering tours later this month.
Hoping to capitalize on the cash-flush Japanese, who are being encouraged to indulge in leisure activities, JR is offering tours priced from $1,230 to $2,000 for a one-way trip to $6,830 for a 10-day nationwide swing through Japan.
