Bryan Dameworth and Deena Drossin of Agoura High will chase national titles in the Kinney cross-country championships today at Balboa Park in San Diego.
The meet will begin with the girls’ race at 10 a.m, followed by the boys’ competition at 10:45.
In addition to the Charger duo, Hoover senior Eliazar Herrera and Westlake junior Jeannie Rothman will vie for All-American status, which is awarded to the top 15 finishers.
Dameworth, who won his third consecutive state Division I title two weeks ago, has the top qualifying time among the 32 entrants in the boys’ field.
The Charger senior, who will try to improve on his fourth-place finish in last year’s national meet, clocked 14 minutes, 39 seconds in winning the 5,000-meter (3.1-mile) West regional Dec. 2 at Woodward Park in Fresno.
Drossin, a junior who finished second (17:40) in the West regional, is making her third consecutive appearance in the nationals.
As a freshman and sophomore, she placed 11th and 17th, respectively, in the national meet. Drossin said that she is attempting to finish among the top five today.
