Protest in France: More than 100 art galleries around France closed Tuesday to protest a tripling of the sales tax on original works of art. The Committee of Art Galleries, which represents 141 galleries in major cities, said the new tax would “brutally end French expansion in the art world.” The tax jumped from 5.6% to 18.6% and applies to all works sold by dealers, artists and auctioneers.
