SANTA ANA — A gang fight in an alley left a 27-year-old Santa Ana man dead and two friends wounded.
The victims, Santa Ana police said, were shot in retaliation for an earlier fight.
Members of one gang were drinking beer in an alley shortly before 9:30 p.m. Saturday behind 1400 W. Walnut St., said Police Cpl. Steve Hawkins, when they saw a lone member of a rival gang approach. They challenged the rival and a fight erupted, but the rival got away.
Police said the rival gang member returned a few minutes later with several friends and another fight broke out. One of the rival gang members fired a gun at three members of the first gang, striking one twice in the back, another in the leg, and the third in the stomach.
The 27-year-old shot in the back was dead at the scene, police said. His name was being withheld Sunday until relatives could be notified.
