Fidel Castro says Cuba would not be the host of the Pan American Games if his country’s bleak economic situation had arisen earlier.
“If we were to make the decision now, with respect to our expenditures on the games, of course we would not have made the decision,” Castro said in a TV interview. “But this was a decision that was made five years ago.”
Castro hinted that Cuba might be ready to host an Olympics with facilities built for the Pan American Games, which begin Friday.
