NEWPORT BEACH — An unidentified bicyclist died Sunday after being struck from behind by a van on Pacific Coast Highway, authorities said.
The van was traveling north about 50 m.p.h. on PCH about 9:20 a.m. when it drifted onto the shoulder just south of Newport Coast Drive and hit the bicyclist, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said. The speed limit is 55 m.p.h. on that stretch of the highway, the spokesman said.
The cyclist, who was not wearing a helmet and carried no identification, was thrown from the bike and suffered major injuries, the spokesman said. He was pronounced dead at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach at 10:46 a.m.
The driver of the van, identified as Angel O. Partida, 44, of Santa Ana, was not cited but the accident is under investigation, authorities said.
