ILLINOIS : School Start Delayed Amid Hiring Freeze

The Chicago Board of Education voted to delay the start of classes until Sept. 14, citing staff vacancies and a hiring freeze imposed by the Legislature. Schools had been scheduled to open Wednesday, but the school system was shut down much of last week, delaying preparations for the new school year, after the school board failed to submit a balanced budget. Gov. Jim Edgar signed a bill temporarily waiving the balanced budget requirement so schools could open on time. But lawmakers also imposed a hiring freeze.
