City Council Salaries

Reducing Los Angeles City Council salaries as a letter (Nov. 22) suggested would do little to help the city’s financial problems. People are misguided in objecting to what these “public servants” earn. I spent six years as staff to a former member of the City Council. Council members, like other elected officials, carry a great deal of responsibility and most work 70-plus hours a week with evening and weekend meetings. We need these people to be professionals in public office, and should support their being well-paid by insisting on performance commensurate with their pay.
