Southeast : Pond’s Ducks Found Dead

Long Beach officials are wondering why more than a dozen ducks at El Dorado Duck Pond died over the weekend.
Park-goers began discovering the ducks along the pond’s banks Saturday afternoon. Health officials had collected the ducks by Sunday morning, and several of them were sent to a laboratory in San Bernardino to be studied.
“Hopefully, the lab can tell us what we need to do about the problem,” said Long Beach official Phil Hester. The pond, located just off Studebaker Road next to El Dorado Golf Course, remains open.
Hester suspects a virus might be responsible for the deaths. The pond attracts ducks from throughout California, and a virus could spread quickly through the duck population, he said. Still, hundreds of ducks frolicked in the pond and gobbled bread crumbs Monday.
Since Sunday, no other dead ducks have been found at the pond and ducks in other area lakes have remained healthy, Hester said.
