World IN BRIEF : BANGLADESH : Clashes Hurt 200 Outside Parliament

Nearly 200 people were injured in raging battles in Dhaka as Bangladesh’s newly elected Parliament met shortly after Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was sworn in for a second term, defying opposition protests and apparent diplomatic disapproval of the elections that returned her to power. Witnesses said battles erupted as tens of thousands of opposition activists tried to storm Parliament. Police and paramilitary forces matched bomb-throwing protesters with rubber bullets, tear gas and batons. As night fell, gunmen fired at the home of the main opposition leader, Hasina Wajed, bombed a newspaper office and tried to set fire to the residence of the vice chancellor of Dhaka University.
