World IN BRIEF : NORTHERN IRELAND : Sinn Fein Leader to Run in Election

Sinn Fein, the political wing of the militant IRA, said its president, Gerry Adams, will run in Northern Ireland elections called by Britain as a prelude to June peace talks. The party ended speculation last week by announcing that it will contest the May 30 election despite charging that the vote was a British device to entrench Northern Ireland’s majority unionists, opposed to Sinn Fein’s goal of a united Ireland. However, Sinn Fein will be barred from the June negotiations unless the Irish Republican Army calls a truce in its guerrilla campaign against British rule of Northern Ireland.
