PORT HUENEME — Longtime Port Hueneme Councilman Orvene Carpenter has confirmed that he will not seek reelection this fall.
Carpenter’s decision, announced at Wednesday’s council meeting, had been expected.
The 71-year-old retired postmaster has served on the council for all but three years since 1964.
“At this stage of my life, I need to spend as much time as I can with my wife, children and grandchildren,” he said in a written release. “I have been honored by the voters of Port Hueneme, having been elected with the highest number of votes for any candidate each time I ran for office.”
Carpenter’s council term is one of two that expire this fall. Councilwoman Toni Young is expected to seek reelection to her second two-year term, but has not yet filed candidacy papers.
