Don Bankhead, who has served on the City Council for nearly a decade, will lead the city as mayor in 1998.
The councilman was elected in 1988 and reelected in 1992. He was recalled in 1994 over his vote for a utility tax, but he was only out of office for three weeks. Voters put him back on the council during the November 1994 election.
Bankhead, 65, is a retired Fullerton police captain. He served as mayor once before in 1992. The mayoral post is mostly ceremonial and council members nominate and vote on themselves for the job each December.
Chris Norby, who served as mayor for 1996 and 1997, resumed his seat as a councilman after reflecting on the past two years.
“Elected officials must recognize we all serve the same public,” he said. “Rather than just defend our fiscal turf, cities, counties and school districts should work together with the state Legislature and Congress to assure a stable and equitable revenue system.”
