LAKE ISABELLA, Calif. — With erratic winds whipping the flames, a small fire grew quickly Saturday, destroying at least six homes and forcing the evacuation of neighborhoods and campgrounds northeast of Bakersfield.
The fire broke out just before 1 p.m. in dry grass and brush near California 178. The flames exploded from a few acres to up to 4,000 acres, fire officials said.
Five homes and four vehicles, along with garages, a travel trailer, a mobile home, five sheds and a barn were destroyed in the community of Bodfish. Campgrounds in Keysville also were evacuated.
