Thank you for the thought-provoking and optimism-making article [“A Get Together, Outside the Box,” April 19]. Great things seem to be brewing at the Hammer, reflecting a sense of community and immediacy among contemporary artists.
I do want to speak in defense of “wall text” (without didacticism) in that for those who are familiar with contemporary art it may be an easy thing to view a single work in a show and get a feel for what one can experience. But if one is not on familiar terms with the artists’ work, the challenge can sometimes be great.
Museums can’t have people posted at each work to have a conversation with viewers. I’d challenge artists to not tell people what to see or think but rather to guide them in asking questions themselves.
With new technologies, could wall text itself be more of a conversation than a static printed thing?
