The Royal Perth Yacht Club of Australia was chosen as challenger of record for the next America’s Cup, which remains mired in a legal dispute over the defending San Diego Yacht Club’s recent catamaran defense.
A new America’s Cup class sailboat, 74 feet in length, also was proposed at a challengers’ meeting Wednesday in London, where syndicate representatives agreed in principle to adopt a best-of-7 race format and 8-leg courses totaling 24 miles.
A record 23 yacht clubs from 10 countries filed challenges to participate in the next regatta, scheduled for 1991 off San Diego.
