Breezy Start for Cabo San Lucas Race

Thirty-seven ocean sailing yachts got off to a breezy start Saturday in Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s 10th Cabo San Lucas race but were faced with possible fog as they close-reached offshore seeking better winds.
The southwest wind was about 8-10 knots at the start, but within a few minutes it increased to 12-13 as the yachts eased sheets to take advantage of the increasing wind.
The Rachel-Pugh 68 sloop Taxi Dancer, skippered by Mitchell Rouse of California Yacht Club, got the best start at the leeward end of the line and soon appeared to be leading the 14-boat of ultra-light displacement vessels.
The International Offshore Rule (IOR) Class A was made up entirely of boats competing for line honors (first to finish) in the 790-mile race.
Eight of the 10 boats in IOR Class B were Santa Cruz-50s, promising a spirited boat-for-boat race for handicap honors.
