A Guide to the Best of Southern California : CATALOGUES : A Fossil in Every Home
- Share via
‘EVERY HOME should have a fossil,” says April Rhodes-James of Prehistoric Journeys, the mail-order business she owns with herhusband, vertebrate paleontologist Barry James. The Prehistoric Journeys catalogue offers something for every budget: from 65-million-year-old duck-bill dinosaur eggshell fragments ($5) to 30-million-year-old saber-toothed tiger skulls ($10,000 and up). For the fanatical fossil fan, the skeleton of a prehistoric seven-foot cave bear ($50,000) was recently flown in from Germany. Although the bear is only 60,000 years old, it holds the distinction of having inhabited--and having fought over--the tundra with early humans. “They actually walked the Earth, breathing, having babies, being attacked,” Rhodes-James says.
