Idea for Lagoon
Batiquitos Lagoon’s sorry condition at present was correctly set forth in Alicia Cooper’s letter (“Troubled Lagoon,” July 14).
The dredging of Newport Beach’s back bay, leaving narrow islands for bird life safe from predators, is an example of compromise, leaving areas for tidal flow, wildlife preservation and open water.
As a former resident of the Newport back bay area, I see no reason why the “bird islands” approach would not work in Batiquitos Lagoon, satisfying ecological and aesthetic needs of all concerned.
